Just days after ringing in 2020, nearly 50 riders and crew members gathered from states all over Australia, as well as provinces in New Zealand to commence an 840km bike ride. On January 11th, the intrepid group left from Torquay, VIC, beginning a six-day journey to Adelaide, SA. Riders and crew coordinated their expedition with purpose: to raise funds and awareness for vulnerable children in need of nutrition education programs. For six consecutive mornings, the group geared up, clipped in, braved unexpectedly cold conditions, pushed against strong headwinds and rose with the sun at a disciplined 5am start time. This year’s event has so far raised over $80,000 AUD, taking the grand total raised by the event since its inception in 2014 to over $500,000 AUD.
On the final morning, General Manager/Director of Herbalife Nutrition ANZ Peter Hurley kitted up and joined the ride, keeping the group full of vim and vigour for the remaining 70km into Adelaide.
Thank you to everyone who donated and supported the riders and crew. They couldn’t have done it without all the local businesses, communities, and people who generously contributed to the ride and recognised the mission of Herbalife Nutrition Foundation.
Here’s what a Member has to say about the experience:
Michael Hart became known on the ride as ‘the goat’ for his love of climbing hills. There was a fun system of fines amongst the riders to help raise funds along the way – one day, riders and crew were fined $10 to ‘Hug the Goat’ and they raised $400 in one afternoon! Michael raised another $400 with this activity during the Sunday lunchbreak at Spectacular.
“This ride means a lot to me, with what I’ve gone through in my life, and on this ride you make life-long friends. It’s an amazing experience that’s different every year, with a mix of old and new riders and crew. Everyone has personal reasons to ride, we love doing what we do, and we do it all for the kids. Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation really helped my family when we lost one of our twin boys to a brain tumour a few years ago – and they are one of the Casas we raise funds for – so this is a great way to give back.”
